Officiating Pathway

The AWF Officiating Pathway provides Technical Officials with a clear pathway along which to progress from beginner, or Club Referee, to the highest level of weightlifting officiating accreditation: IWF Category 1 Referee.

 

As Technical Officials progress along the pathway, they acquire the knowledge, skills and qualifications required to officiate at events ranging from local Club competitions to State events to National events and, ultimately, International events.

 

The Australian Weightlifting Federation recognises five levels of Technical Official Accreditation

•Club Referee

•State Referee

•National Referee

•IWF Category II Referee

•IWF Category I Referee

 

Club Referee

The Club Referee has a sound knowledge of the IWF Technical and Competition Rules and Regulations and demonstrates competence in the practical application of the rules.

 

Competency at this level is demonstrated through the following activities:

•Completion of the directed learning on the AWF Learning Management System for Club Level Technical Official

•Mentoring:Officiating a minimum of 100 actual competition attempts with a Mentor who holds a minimum of National Referee accreditation and is authorised by the relevant State or Territory Weightlifting Association to act as an Officiating Mentor. The pass rate for the 100 lifts will be 70% asassessed by the Mentor.

 

State Referee

For a Club Referee to be eligible to progress to the level of State Referee, he or she must have officiated at a minimum of 5 Club or State level events in the past 12 months.

 

The State Level of competency is demonstrated through the following activities:

•Having attained the qualification of Club Referee

•Completion of the directed learning on the AWF Learning Management System for State Level Technical Official

•Mentoring: Officiating a minimum of 100 actual competition attempts with a Mentor who holds a minimum of National Referee accreditation and is authorised by the relevant State or Territory Weightlifting Association to act as an Officiating Mentor. The pass rate for the 100 lifts will be 80% asassessed by the Mentor.

•Successful completion of the AWF Technical Rules Exam through the AWF Learning Management System, with a pass rate of 85%

 

National Level

For a State Referee to be eligible to progress to the level of National Referee, he or she must have officiated at a minimum of 10 events, which may include any number of Club, State and National events, in the past 2 years.

 

The National Level of competency is demonstrated through the following activities:

•Having held the qualification of State Referee

•Satisfactorily fulfilling thef ollowing roles within the previous 2 years:

  • Referee at three (3) Club or State Open events

  • Referee at two (2) State or National Championship events

  • Timekeeper at two (2) State or National Championship Events

•Practicalassessment: Officiating a minimum of 100 attempts in a State or National competition overseen by a Jury. The pass rate will be 80% as measured by the average score recorded by three Jury members on the AWF Practical Referee Examination form.

•Successful completion of the AWF Technical Rules Exam through the Learning Management System,with a pass rate of 90%.

 

IWF Category II

The IWF Category II Level of competency is demonstrated through the following activities:

•Having held the qualification of National Referee

•A Referee must, as a minimum, have satisfactorily fulfilled the following roles within the previous 5 years:

  • Referee at three (3) State events

  • Referee at two (2) National events

  • Technical Controller at two (2) National Events

  • Timekeeper at two (2) National Events

  • Marshal at two (2) National Events

  • Timekeeper at two (2) State Championship Events

•Have been a nactive Technical Official within the AWF National and State competition program for a minimum of five years

•Undertake and pass the written examination prescribed by the International Weightlifting Federation

•Undertake and pass the practical examination prescribed by the International Weightlifting Federation

 

IWF Category I

The IWF Category I Level of competency is demonstrated through the following activities:

•Having held the qualificationof IWF Category II Referee for a minimum of 2 years

•A Referee must, as a minimum, have satisfactorily fulfilled the following roles within the previous 5 years:

  • Referee at three (3) State events

  • Referee at two (2) National or International events

  • Technical Controller at two (2) National or International Events

 

  • Timekeeper at two (2) National or International Events

  • Marshal at two (2) National or International Events

•Have been an active Technical Official within the AWF National and State competition program for a minimum of five years

•Undertake and pass the written examination prescribed by the International Weightlifting Federation

•Undertake and pass the practical examination prescribed by the International Weightlifting Federation

 

International Technical Official

Upgrade Requirements

  • Upgrades from National to International Category 2, or from International Category 2 to International Category 1 can only be undertaken at the following events (unless otherwise notified by the AWF).
    • The AWF Australian U15 and Youth Championships
    • The AWF Australian Junior and U23 Championships
    • The AWF Australian Senior Championships
  • Applications to upgrade must be received by the AWF Technical Committee no later than 60 days before each event. Applications are to be sent to Phil Maunder at pmaunder@awf.com.au
  • The application must detail all criteria listed in the upgrade matrix above. Applications that don’t

fulfil the criteria will not be considered.

  • The AWF will notify applicants of their success or otherwise to be considered for an upgrade no later than 30 days before the scheduled event.

 

Getting Started

•Club Referee – Go to https://www.awf.com.au/education/technical-officials/enrolment to start theprocess

•StateReferee

  • Successfully complete the directed learning on the AWF Learning Management System*
  • Reach out to your State Coordinator to organise mentoring at a State Event
  • Successfully complete the AWF Technical Exam on the AWF Learning Management System.

•National

  • Ensure you’ve met the minimum activity requirements above
  • Reach out to your State Coordinator to nominate you to the AWF for a National Level Upgrade. They will work with the AWF to:

▪Organise the practical examination

▪Organise access to the AWF Technical Exam
